Madrid

May 6th – May 8th

On May 6th Madrid awaits you, the capital and largest city in Spain. Upon arrival you will travel to your hotel. After a brief rest you will discover area points of interest with your tour leader, which will focus on an overview of monuments, parks, gardens, museums, and picturesque streets and plazas as time permits. May 7th begins with a visit to the Prado Museum*. Later this afternoon a visit is planned to the Royal Palace* and Cathedral* along with a guided tour of the city*. You may wish to optionally visit the Arte Reina Sofia (free to those who submit their application and deposit by December 15, 2014). One evening you may wish to shop at Plaza Mayor to look for suede and leather bargains and sample “tapas” before departing to Cordoba.

Cordoba, Granada and Tangier

May 8th – 11th

On May 8th your journey continues as you travel to Cordoba. In the Middle Ages Cordoba had become the intellectual center of Europe and was also noted for its predominantly Muslim society that was tolerant toward its Christian and Jewish minorities. After lunch you will take an informative walking tour of the Juderia*(Jewish quarter) and the Mosque*. On May 9th travel to Granada which was a flourishing city under the Moors, then the Catholic crown and the baroque period. A tour the Alhambra Complex*, a Moorish citadel and palace is also planned. The afternoon is reserved for your guided city tour* of this architecturally diverse city. On May 10th board a ferry across the Mediterranean to continue your journey to exotic Tangier where you may be treated to a delicious Moroccan lunch. Your guided city tour* will include a visit the Kasbah*, The Tomb of Ibn Battouta* and the souk*(open air market). Tonight you sleep under the North African stars. May 11th is dedicated to a morning visit to the Kasbah Museum*, before your sojourn continues on to Cadiz.

Cadiz and Seville

May 11th – May 14th

This afternoon discover Cadiz with a guided city tour*. Cadiz is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in Spain and one of the oldest in southwestern Europe. On May 12th you will travel on to Seville, site of the Expo ’92, which provides the most complete picture of the spirit of Spain as a whole because of its wealth of art, architecture, museums, and shopping. Some of the many sites awaiting you on your guided tour* of the city may include the Almond Tower with a Christian Crown, Torre de Oro, Santa Cruz-Jewish Quarter, and the Moorish District. The highlight of this evening will be a Flamenco Show*. On May 13th you will visit La Giralda*, magnificent bell tower of the Seville Cathedral, which is third in size among the churches of the Christian world. Next stop will be the regal Royal El Alcazar Palace* which was originally a Moorish fort and the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. The afternoon is dedicated to leisure, last minute shopping and exploring the local ambience of Seville. You will return to your own beautiful and historical city on May 14th taking with you fabulous memories of this wonderful adventure.
