 Florence

March 16 – 18, 2019

As birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence will thrill you with its treasures! Upon arrival on March 16th, there will be ample time to visit the Gold and Silver shops and leather markets on the Ponte Vecchio, the most ancient and photographed bridge in Florence. The Ponte Vecchio is a medieval stone closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Dedicate the afternoon to visiting area points of interest such as the Boboli Gardens, Dante’s house or the Medici Chapel.  March 17th will begin with a guided city tour* to include many of the important sights of this historic town such as the Accademia*, the museum of Michelangelo’s “David”, the Duomo*, the third largest church in the world, and the Uffizi Gallery*, one of the oldest art museums in the world.  March 18th, you will bid farewell to Florence as you travel to Rome by train*.

 

 

Rome

March 18 – 23, 2019

Upon your arrival to Rome on March 18th, spend the afternoon exploring optional area points of interest with your tour leader. March 19th will begin with a guided tour of the city* including a visit to the Pantheon* and Colosseum and Forum*.  A highlight of this day will be a visit to the Borghese Gallery, (free to those who submit their application and deposit by the deadline), which has been defined as the most beautiful collection in the world. March 20th, you will embark on an excursion to explore the preserved remains of the ancient city of Pompeii*. Here, the Roman Empire speaks directly to you through glimpses of ancient everyday life and real people frozen in time since the city’s burial by Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD.  Begin March 21st with a guided visit to the Vatican Museums* including St. Peter’s Basilica* and the Sistine Chapel*, where you will view the famous Rafael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel.  The gorgeous Sistine Chapel, painted by the illustrious Michelangelo, and the massive St. Peter’s Basilica will leave you awestruck. This evening, you will enjoy a chance to create and sample traditional cuisine with a cooking class*. On March 22nd, you will get a real feel of ancient Rome while on your Bike Tour* along the Appian Way. Enjoy fantastic views of ancient Roman ruins while biking along the cobbled streets of Rome. Next, you will dive into Ancient Roman History and suit up in Roman military tunics provided by Gruppo Storico Romano Gladiator School* as you are introduced to the basic techniques of Gladiatorial Fighting! Next, you will enjoy a visit to the Catacombs* located along the Via Appia Antica, a beautiful cobbled thoroughfare flanked by grassy fields, Roman structures and towering pine trees. The catacombs mark the burial place of martyrs from as early as the second and third centuries.  On March 23rd, you will board a plane bound for home with souvenirs, memories, and perhaps a photo or two in tow marking the end of your European adventure.
