Athens & Classical Greece

March 13 – 17, 2016

On March 13th you will arrive in Athens to begin your European adventure. You will spend the evening exploring with your tour leader after checking into your hotel. On March 14th you will dedicate the day to a full day sightseeing and guided Museum tour including visits to the New Acropolis Museum*, Acropolis, Parthenon*, whose dimensions and the lengths conform to the mathematical principles of proportion of the Pythagoreans, and much more. Witness the influence of Pythagoras, Euclid and Archimedes whose geometrical axioms and rules are still taught in schools today. Later this afternoon a highlight of your tour will be dinner and sunset at Cape Sounion, home of the Temple of Poseidon (free to those who submit their application and deposit by the deadline). The present Temple is built on the site of the older ruins among cliffs tumbling into the Aegean Sea. Cape Sounion was ideally located for worship of the powerful god of the sea. March 15th begins your classical tour of Greece with guided visits to the National Archeological Museum* before departing to Mycenae and Epidaurus. Highlights of this day include views of the Corinth Canal, the ancient theatre in Epidaurus*, and the Tomb of Agamemnon & Palace in Mycenae*. You will enjoy a brief visit to Nauplia before spending the night in Tolo. On March 16th you will visit ancient Olympia*, where the first recorded Ancient Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C., and it’s Archaeological Museum* with your guide before departing for Delphi the next morning.

 Delphi & Saronic Islands Cruise

March 17 – 20, 2016

On March 17th Delphi will greet you with its historic architecture and rich scenery. In Delphi* the temple of Apollo and the seat of the Oracle, to whom the ancient Greeks looked for advice, awaits your visit. During your full day guided tour of Delphi, including lunch, you will enjoy visits to the Delphi Site and Museum*. Upon returning to Athens on March 18th, you a visit is planned to the Benaki Museum*, where you will see artifacts from prehistoric, archaic, classical, Hellenic and Roman times. This evening you may wish to simply stroll through the historic center of Athens to enjoy the classical ambience of this city. Depart Athens on March 19th for a full day Saronic Cruise to the Islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra*!  Aegina*, known for its rich history, inspiring pistachio grove landscapes, and picturesque seaside villages such as St. Marina with its taverns, traditional shops and beautiful golden beaches. You may choose to visit the majestic 5th century BC temple of the Goddess Aphaia which is regarded as the best preserved ancient temple of Greece offering a magnificent view of the whole Saronic Gulf or the church of St. Nectarios known for its impressive Byzantine architecture and silver-carved tomb of the Saint. Poros Town* rests in a narrow strait between Poros Island and the Peloponnese, quietly nestled in the embrace of deep green pine forests and mildly scented lemon groves. A climb to the town’s magnificent bell tower offers an unforgettable view. A favorite of the international Jet-set Hydra* is the beloved muse of painters, craftsmen and photographers. Its unique architecture, crystal clear waters, splendid craft & jewel shops, folk art and the island’s traditional means of transport – the donkey, make it one of the last examples of “living Mediterranean history”.
