Athens, Islands Cruise & Cape Sounion

March 25 – 29, 2016

Depart Athens on March 25th for a 3 day Islands Cruise to Mykonos, Kusadasi and Crete*! The cruise’s first port of call is Mykonos where you may stroll the picturesque alleys of Mykonos Town and, after the sun sets, enjoy its exhilarating nightlife. From Mykonos you sail overnight to arrive in time for breakfast in quiet Kusadasi on March 26th, whose white sand beaches are a stone’s throw from the incredible excavation of the ancient city of Ephesus and its Terrace Houses (one of the world’s largest open-air museums), the House of the Virgin Mary, beautiful Sirince Village and the thrilling metropolis of Izmir. This afternoon your cruise continues to the holy island of Patmos: many believe John the Apostle wrote the Book of Revelations in a mountainside grotto on Patmos where he heard the voice of God. Further up the mountain, within the white walls of Hora, the monastery founded in his honor in 1088 stands sentinel above this verdant island. You leave Patmos and sail through another lovely Aegean evening to arrive in Heraklion on March 27th, an ancient Venetian port and the fascinating capital of Crete. Greece’s largest island is a paradise of secluded beaches, hiking trails, rivers and archeological marvels, including the Minoan Palace of Knossos and the Archeological Museum in Heraklion. This afternoon you will sail from Heraklion for an evening on incredible Santorini before returning to Athens on March 28th.  After disembarking from your cruise, you will have ample time at leisure for last minute shopping, exploring or sightseeing before an afternoon excursion to Cape Sounion. A highlight of your tour will be dinner and sunset at Cape Sounion*, home of the Temple of Poseidon (free to those who submit their application and deposit by the deadline). The present Temple is built on the site of the older ruins among cliffs tumbling into the Aegean Sea. Cape Sounion was ideally located for worship of the powerful god of the sea. On March 29th you will return to the United States with fond memories, amazing experiences and perhaps a souvenir or two from your European adventure.
